Decades past, in what is now called the Thayan Age of Wharftown, that port was led by the Red Wizard Ayin Mesmer. Almost any topic that touches onto his administration is controversial - some call him a brutal tyrant, others applaud his efficiency; he brought wealth and political clout to the port, but also an iron fist.
It began innocently enough, with a system of ministers and advisors. But bit by bit, Thayan influences slipped into the town. Positions were held more and more dominantly, almost exclusively, by individuals of Thayan descent. The Waymen were disbanded, and replaced by Ayin's personal household guard. The Temple of Selune was desecrated, and remade into a Temple of Kossuth; but the final straw was when Ayin declared himself the sole overlord of the town. That was when those watching from the outside thought that enough was enough.
A coalition of adventurers from almost every city and major organization were brought together by the Archmage Kathele Se'Lhane and Herial Ghalen, a former Cordorian guardsman who instigated the mob to outrage with the claim that Ayin Mesmer and the government of Wharftown had assisted in the abduction of his newborn niece. They entered in through the Pass of Despair, smashed through a ragtag militia blockade, and commenced with the sack of the town.
Some claim that the attackers butchered the town without mercy, others claim that most of the violence was done by opportunistic passers-by unaffiliated with the main group. A healthy number in both camps can agree, that the majority of the damages were caused by the bloodlust and errant spellcasting of Archmage Kathele. The only thing that remains certain, is that the entirety of the Militia and a good number of the citizenry were wiped out, and an elf by the name of Jheramaine Naethandreil was installed as mayor.
Following the slaughter, so many men were slain that it was left to the women of Wharftown to take up arms. Since then, the Waymen have had a very high number of female warriors.
